U.S. Rice to China

Culminating years of effort, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue and China’s Vice Premier Wang Yang have signed a phytosanitary protocol that will permit U.S rice imports to China.

China is the world’s largest importer and consumer of rice, eating the equivalent of the entire U.S. rice crop in just under two weeks. This market is expected to include export opportunities for California Rice.

Today’s news is an important step, although more hurdles will need to be cleared before exports can occur. Expectations are that Chinese inspectors will visit export facilities this fall.We thank USA Rice for working to help this breakthrough occur. California Rice Commission
